Household Hazards for Dogs: Beware of These Potentially Poisonous Things in Your Home

When you bring a dog into your house, you may discover that you have more dangerous items in your home than you expected. A variety of household items are dangerous to dogs. By recognizing the potential hazards, you are able to select better options for your house.

Cleaning Products

The obvious risk to your pet is poisonous cleaning products. Bleach, ammonia or other cleaning products are dangerous when your pet gets into the product. It can cause injuries from exposure to eyes or other sensitive areas. When your dog drinks or eats a cleaning product, it may even result in poisoning. You want to keep all cleaning products out of reach of your pets, including any wash clothes or sponges you use as part of the cleaning process.

When you look at cleaning products, you want to find a co2 based cleaner. Fizzion cleaner is a safe option for your home that does not harm your dog. It is environmentally friendly, safe for pets and will still help you keep your house clean and fresh.

Food Items

It should not be a surprise that human foods are not always safe for dogs. The items you put in the garbage and the foods you keep out of the fridge are potentially dangerous to a dog. You want to use caution when keeping foods out of the fridge or giving your pet any human foods. The best rule of thumb is sticking to pet-related food items. Do not give your dog any human foods, particularly fruits, vegetables, grains or chocolate.

Plants

Household plants are not always safe for dogs. Sago palms and related plants may cause serious health problems for a dog if they eat the plant. Avoid the risk by avoiding indoor plants and discussing any plants you want to bring into your house and yard with your vet.

Your house is not always a safe environment for your dog. By taking the time to evaluate the risks to your pet, you keep him or her safe. The key is finding the hazards and removing them or selecting alternatives that do not cause harm to pets.

Hundreds of Dogs Lost their Homes in Puerto Rico: Here’s how to Help

At Fizzion, we are more than just a company that makes pet cleaning products. We care about the welfare of animals wherever they live, and especially those who are still waiting for a home of their own.

“You cannot forget the dogs. When you forget the dogs,
you forget what a good life means,”
                                                                        – Sonia Collazo

Life for homeless dogs in Puerto Rico was already difficult before the island was devastated by hurricanes Irma and Maria. Due to an economic crisis, little government intervention and a lack of spaying and neutering, hundreds of strays or satos roamed the island with little hope. Since the hurricanes, many parts of the island still do not have electricity. People also have limited access to fresh food and palatable water continues to be an everyday struggle for many families. Sadly, many pets have been abandoned during this crisis.

Hope for Puerto Rico’s Stray Dogs

There are several organizations working hard to care for Puerto Rico’s homeless dogs until today. During this time of hardship, when basic human needs are still lacking, it’s understandable that few Puerto Rican citizens have the extra time or financial means to support local animal rescue groups.

Organizations such as The Sato Project, Second Chance and others, find dogs living on the beach or in the street, provide them with medical care, socialization and much-needed love before relocating them to forever homes.

A Chance to Find A New Home

Early this year, Southwest Airlines flew 62 dogs and cats out of Puerto Rico for adoption in US. Thanks to Lucky Dog Animal Rescue who teamed up with Puerto Rican animal rescue group, PR Animals and Friendship Hospital for Animals for making this special flight a reality!

How You Can Help

Even until today, Puerto Rican pet rescues are still available for adoption via the Lucky Dog website, so if you’re thinking of adding a four-legged member to your family, be sure to check it out and help our fur friends find a new home!

Direct monetary donations are also appreciated, but there are also several ways to support the rescue mission that you may not have thought of:

• Donate your airline miles.

The rescue will use the miles to fly volunteers who transport puppies and special needs dogs to their new homes

• Collect supplies.

Gather supplies such as dog food, water bowls, pet cleaning products, leashes, collars and canine medications to send to the rescue. Directions and a specific list of needs can be found on the organization’s website.

•  Shop at AmazonSmile.

Shop and select one of the rescue organizations from Puerto Rico to receive the .5% donation eligible from that program.

•  Participate in fundraisers at work.

Ask the HR department where you work if your employer will participate in a matching-gift donation or fundraiser.

These simple ways can mean a lot for pets looking for a new home!

The Perfect Guide for First-Time Pet Paw-rents: How to Take Care of Your New Puppy

The decision to adopt a puppy is one of the happiest decisions you can make. But once you get that furry bundle of joy home, the work of dog ownership really begins.

Before you actually select a pet, prepare your home and pantry with the necessities for puppy care. Having the following items already on hand will help both you and the new family member transition smoothly. Here are few must-haves for bringing a new dog home according to Vetstreet:

● Food, treats and bowls
● Crate or dog house

● Safe chew toys
● Grooming tools, including brushes, and shampoo
● First-aid kits

Puppy proofing your house can save money and frustration and just may save your new pet’s life. Remove electrical cords and breakable items from puppy’s reach as well as any cleaning supplies, medications or potentially toxic items in the home. Move the trash can under the sink or purchase one with a secure lid. Also, prepare your yard by removing dangerous objects and making sure gates and fences are in good repair.

Veterinary Care

One of the most important decisions as a new paw-rent is to find a veterinarian. Puppies need a series of vaccines to protect them from potentially fatal diseases. These shots must be administered on a regular schedule in order to be effective. Selecting a vet is a personal decision. However, it is best to choose the best to expect the best care. It is highly recommended to choose an veterinary clinic that’s been accredited by the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA). AAHA accredited hospitals go fur and beyond to provide the best pet care and it is best to consider what will benefit your furry friend in the long run. But how do you know decide on a vet? According to Pets WebMD, the best way is to schedule an appointment, ask questions and find out what suits you and your furry friend the best.

Training

Crate training, potty training, obedience training—training a puppy requires a lot of patience. But training is a pet parent’s responsibility and without it, you could end up with an unruly dog that no one wants to be around. Puppies need and deserve your time and attention!
