you forget what a good life means,”
– Sonia Collazo
Life for homeless dogs in Puerto Rico was already difficult before the island was devastated by hurricanes Irma and Maria. Due to an economic crisis, little government intervention and a lack of spaying and neutering, hundreds of strays or satos roamed the island with little hope. Since the hurricanes, many parts of the island still do not have electricity. People also have limited access to fresh food and palatable water continues to be an everyday struggle for many families. Sadly, many pets have been abandoned during this crisis.
Hope for Puerto Rico’s Stray Dogs
There are several organizations working hard to care for Puerto Rico’s homeless dogs until today. During this time of hardship, when basic human needs are still lacking, it’s understandable that few Puerto Rican citizens have the extra time or financial means to support local animal rescue groups.
Organizations such as The Sato Project, Second Chance and others, find dogs living on the beach or in the street, provide them with medical care, socialization and much-needed love before relocating them to forever homes.
A Chance to Find A New Home
Early this year, Southwest Airlines flew 62 dogs and cats out of Puerto Rico for adoption in US. Thanks to Lucky Dog Animal Rescue who teamed up with Puerto Rican animal rescue group, PR Animals and Friendship Hospital for Animals for making this special flight a reality!
How You Can Help
Even until today, Puerto Rican pet rescues are still available for adoption via the Lucky Dog website, so if you’re thinking of adding a four-legged member to your family, be sure to check it out and help our fur friends find a new home!
Direct monetary donations are also appreciated, but there are also several ways to support the rescue mission that you may not have thought of:
• Donate your airline miles.
The rescue will use the miles to fly volunteers who transport puppies and special needs dogs to their new homes
• Collect supplies.
Gather supplies such as dog food, water bowls, pet cleaning products, leashes, collars and canine medications to send to the rescue. Directions and a specific list of needs can be found on the organization’s website.
• Shop at AmazonSmile.
Shop and select one of the rescue organizations from Puerto Rico to receive the .5% donation eligible from that program.
• Participate in fundraisers at work.
Ask the HR department where you work if your employer will participate in a matching-gift donation or fundraiser.
These simple ways can mean a lot for pets looking for a new home!
