National K9 Veterans Day: 9 Dogs Who Prove Dogs Are Heroes, Too!

Here are some of the many heroic K9s who have bravely served for their country.

Cena

Cena served in Afghanistan in 2009 – 2010 alongside his best friend. He retired in 2014.

Chips

Chips served in World War II in France, Germany, Italy and North Africa. He saved his partner from a machine gun fire by attacking gunners and forcing them to surrender to U.S troops.

Layka

Layka survived four gunshots during an ambush in Afghanistan in 2013. Despite her injury, she bravely was able to save soldiers from an attacker.

Sergeant Stubby

Sergeant Stubby served in WWI battlefields in France. Some of his victories included finding lost soldiers, waking up sleeping troops during gas attacks, and even catching a German spy.

Rex

Rex survived an explosive injury in Iraq in 2006. He completed over 100 missions and retired in 2012.

Smoky

Smoky served in World War II. She specialized in warning soldiers when there was  incoming artillery. She was part of over a dozen missions and over 150 air raids. 

Bretagnen

Bretagnen was a 9/11 ground zero search dog. She retired at 9 years old. 

Rags

Rags served in WWI. One of his most heroic moments was in 1918 when he ran vital messages through falling bombs during the Battle of Meuse Argonne. He was badly gassed and partially blinded, but luckily, he survived.

Treo

Treo served in Afghanistan alongside his owner and best friend. He became known as one of the bravest dogs to serve in the British military.
